IN the late medieval age people began keeping notebooks of interesting stories, prayers, quotations and other trivia they came across. These commonplace books (also called Zibaldones or Hodgepodges) were, in effect, the Facebooks of their day with family members and friends contributing to each other’s Hodgepodges. By the 19th Century every serious figure travelled with a notebook and pen specifically for hodge-podging. This notebook is a collection of folklore, legends, walks and tales I have come across since moving to Cumbria in 2005. I’d always jotted down things of interest as my wife Lesley and I walked the county’s footpaths and fells. Semi-retirement offered me the time to turn these jottings into something a bit more considered. I had always wanted to explore handwritten and hand-drawn illustrated books so this 'Hodgepodge' is my attempt to re-create those notebooks of old that record anything that piques my interest.

Full description

This is a handwritten, hand-drawn and handbound edition of my notebook on folklore and legends of Cumbria, UK. It includes boggles (ghosts), lonnings (lanes), holy wells, corpse roads, postman's paths, fairy legends, and much more. It includes such delights as Ticklebelly Alley (in Eskdale), the Witches' resting stone at St Bees, the Fairy Drinking Well at Ambleside and even a recipe for Cumberland Bridal Cake. I turned the rough notes I make while walking the fells into this handbound notebook during lockdown. It is printed on quality paper from the James Cropper Paper Mill in Cumbria. The book is hardback, cloth bound with endtape and bookmark. There is a dustjacket. The book is slightly smaller than A5 and has 78 pages. PLEASE NOTE: This was originally branded as my 'HODGEPODGE' but has had to be retitled Cumbrian Notebook (so apart from the title it is identical to the Hodgepodge!)
