Genuine Royal Sussex Traditional Oval Gardening Trugs from the original makers of the famous Sussex Trug. First made in Herstmonceux by our company in 1829 and bought by Queen Victoria at the Great Exhibition in 1855.

These Trugs are hand made to a very high standard, for the frame we use sweet chestnut coppiced here in Sussex. We use English grown cricket bat willow for the boards. Our Trugs are useful for absolutely anything, ranging from a decorative piece in your home to using in your garden to collect vegetables or flowers, carrying tools etc. They are very strong and durable. Each trug has a unique batch number and is initialled by the craftsman and is guaranteed for five years for normal usage.

The large Trug is a nice size, approximately 22 x 12 inches / 56 x 30 cms , not too big and suitable for a lady or man. The last Smith family member to own the company was Eddie Smith who, together with his wife Winnie ran it until they retired. Although, sadly, Eddie and Winnie are no longer with us but Winnie was a frequent visitor to our workshops for many years. Since then the company has undergone several changes of owner and was purchased by Robin & Peter Tuppen, Anna Piper and Frank Odell in 1989.

Robin now runs the business, supplying Trugs all over the World. He exports somewhere in the region of 30% of the Trug production every year. In the autumn of 1997 Robin Tuppen demonstrated Trug making at the Courson Gardening Show in France where he was awarded the ‘Ruban d’Argent’ (Silver Ribbon) for his Trugs and then in the spring of 1998 and 1999 he was awarded the ‘Ruban d’Or’ (Gold Ribbon). Other awards have been received in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.
