"Childe Rolande to the Dark Tower Came", by Robert Browning, is one of my favourite poems. It is fantastic, sinister, terrible and beautiful - all in equal measure - and I can't recommend it highly enough.
I wanted to try and capture something of the poem's brooding, strange atmosphere in this painting of a traveller reaching the end of their journey.
Browning's poem pre-dates much of modern fantasy and some of the symbolism of that genre may be traced back to works such as this.
