Re-purposed, re-imagined
Jewellery and objects made by award winning eco-artist, jeweller - Alison Bailey Smith, based in Wellington Road Studios, unit 2, 28a Wellington Road, Birkenhead, CH43 2JE

Made in Wirral by me, Alison Bailey Smith. I trained as a jeweller in Edinburgh in the 80s and 90s and have been recycling since then, in different places all round the world. Now back in the UK. My work is definitely a by-product of the 21st C & I’ve been described as a 'techno -cannibal' by BBC journalist Clare English. My career has spanned 3 decades & 3 different countries since leaving Edinburgh College of Art in 1990. The motivation behind my work comes from being the child of post war parents, Scottish thriftiness & an avid watcher of Blue Peter! I am keen to re-use, re-develop & re-create at my home & in my business.

This piece is part of a group of brooches of concentric circles made during lockdown and inspired by painter Kandinsky's colour studies from 1913. https://www.wassilykandinsky.net/work-370.php

Full description

Sloppy Circle Brooch - inspired by Kandinsky's paintings of circles -made of wire wrapped around remnants of fabric printed with my designs (from Woven Monkey) and coiled with a wire stitched edge with plastic packaging used on reverse from tube of conditioner. Made during lockdown in 2020 from a controlled colour palette of subtle greens, purples and yellow. Some of the wire has been recycled from old televisions and combined with bought lacquered wire. The scraps of fabric made from my designs were used in a piece called RETREAT which was selected as part of this year's Williamson Open at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in Birkenhead. I have also used a green strip of plastic from a milk bottle.

6.8 cm x 6.5cm

Supplied in a sturdy green recycled box, branded card and delivered with a card that defines the components used in construction. I reuse outer packaging for shipping. Apologies for environmental reasons - I am only shipping with the UK at the moment.

Designed by Alison Bailey Smith in Liverpool City Region
