I have always been fascinated by old-fashioned traditions and customs.

The practice of giving love spoons started in Wales during the 17th century. They were handcrafted by male suitors as a romantic gesture for the maiden they admired.

Traditionally, love spoons declared a gentleman's intent to court a lady. Given as a romantic sentiment, it symbolised a carvers devotion to producing a work of art worthy of their beloved.

The tokens were typically crafted from a single piece of wood. Some even believed that they represented an early form of engagement ring.

A piece of oak was selected and cut to accommodate the size of the love spoon. The love spoon was cut using a scrollsaw following a design. I then handcarved it to enhance the fine detail. Next I sanded it to a smooth finish and coated it with Danish Oil, which is food and toy safe. I then waxed the love spoon.
