Item details

Lions were kept at the Tower of London along with other exotic animals in the menagerie from the 1200s until 1835. This started when in 1235 Henry III was given 3 lions by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. The Barbary lion was used by Landseer as inspiration for the statues at the base of Nelsons column in Trafalgar Square. Long thought to be extinct, some have recently been discovered in the collection of the King of Morocco.
