Howlite is naturally in the white-to-grey range, with darker marble-like veining.
It is quite porous, and takes dye very well.
When dyed a turquoise blue colour, howlite bears a remarkable resemblance to true turquoise, but at a fraction of the cost.
Turquoise is the traditional birthstone for Sagittarius and December.
An alternative birthstone for December is Blue Zircon.

I have added this necklace to the 'Seconds Sunday' sale - it is in perfect condition, but is an old line, and I need to clear some older stock to make way for new lines.
Pretty necklace of wood lace stone and turquoise howlite beads separated by hematite ovals.
It features a sweet little hematite puffed star bead set between 4mm and 6mm sparkly Swarovski crystals in a colour called "blue zircon".
Wood lace stone, or wood lace agate, is a form of petrified wood, the fossilised remains of terrestrial vegetation.
Over time, the organic material of the wood is replaced with silicate minerals - usually quartz - leaving a 3-dimensional stone impression of the original organic material.
This necklace measures approximately 18 inches (46cm).
Delivery is free within the UK.
Your necklace will be wrapped in tissue and sent, 2nd class, in a recycled padded envelope.
