There's so much plastic in Christmas decorations (especially the ones made by my children), and tinsel is a terror. It's PVC, mass produced and cheap, which means come January, when we're desperately wanting all signs of Christmas to be magicked away to the attic, it's often thrown out with the tree.
It was the spikey, stand-uppy off-snips of string that made me think of tinsel. I collect all my off-snips, using the longer lengths for tying skeins of string when dyeing, and the smaller ones for... well, I'm not sure yet but something. So I had a bit of a play with them on the sewing machine and the idea of STRINSEL (string tinsel) was born.
So this Christmas STRINSEL - a small production, plastic free alternative to PVC tinsel - will be adorning my tree and afterwards it will be wrapped in tissue and placed at the top of the box until next year, and next year, and the year after that...

Introducing STRINSEL! Made from nothing but string and cotton thread, I made this garland as a plastic free alternative to the classic Christmas tree adornment, tinsel.
The Strinsel comes in approximately 2m lengths and is sewn together, by me, at my old oak dining table. It should therefore not be cut to size, otherwise it will all unravel.
I use Everlasto 100% Polished Cotton Twine, made in Bolton, UK at the James Lever Factory where they've been manufacturing twine, cord and rope for over 150 years.
Strinsel must be kept a minimum of 1 metre away from fire, flame and other heat sources. Please do bear this in mind, especially if you use candles and/or fires (real flame or otherwise) at Christmas time. I don't use fire retardants on any of my products, but these are available to buy elsewhere in spray form should you want extra piece of mind or intend on using Strinsel in areas where this is required by law or legislation. Legally, I'm not able to offer fire retarding as a service, nor am I able to advise on this matter.
No glue or plastic is used in my work, and all the packaging I use can be widely recycled. Yippee!
