We have a small Folio Society edition of The Pied Piper of Hamelin - a poem by Robert Browning, which I was made to learn when about six or seven years old. I came across it when looking for something else in the bookcase, and thought I could tell the story in stitches. I hope I've succeeded.

Full description
I am very proud of this unique hand embroidered Afghan, representing the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Entirely my own design, it is depicted largely though not entirely, in cross-stitch. The Piper occupies the two centre squares, surrounded above by converging rats, and below by gathering children. The material is a grey-blue even-weave acrylic, which I have hemmed on three sides, and fringed on the fourth. The top hem is open at the ends, to allow the insertion of a dowel for hanging. (The dowel is not included.)
This artwork measures 19.5" (50 cm.) x 25" (64 cm.) excluding the fringe. It can be washed in cool water and ironed on the reverse with a cool iron. Do not tumble dry.
