Traditional style drinking cup based on Scandinavian styles for drinking your tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soup and broth and very often wine! Has an easy to hold horizontal handle hand carved with the tool marks visible as they are around the rim. Quite a handy cup that is highly unlikely to get chipped finished with a light organic flax oil. I've designed it with everyday use in mind so it's a case of use it wash it and use it again - it also works well as a porridge bowl so very versatile. I turned the cup as a bowl with a large rim, then hacked most of the rim off with an axe and then finished by using a carving goudge and knives to finish the handle and new rim. I was going to smooth the tool marks away but I felt they added character and are an appealing design feature - part of the making process.
The wood is Spalted Sycamore from the Lee Valley Park and has a beautiful grain with all those pretty dark flashes of spalting and as large cups go I really like it. It reminds me of giant French breakfast ones where you dunk your bread or croissant into strong coffee to wake you up. It feels beautifully smooth when you hold it and the dark golden brown flecks remind me of fizzing firework patterns...
