I've been wanting to experiment with bowl turning and carving for some months now so when I came some Sycamore from Waltham Abbey I had a great time playing with my axes and other hand tools. This project was to see how fine and light I could turn the bowl and yet make it robust and useful with a graduating curved rim hand carved and to leave the handles with the gentle turning patterns visible - and I'm very happy with the result...

Full description

Sycamore bowl known as a Porringer turned and carved with two handles for passing round filled with sweets, nuts, snacks or for decoration. This one is an beautiful pale creamy white blond and honey grain with some interesting dark flecks running through the wood. Sycamore, traditionally a food use timber, has a tight dense grain and is very strong with a high silica content (which blunts my tools so I'm re-sharpening frequently). It takes on a stunning silky smooth sheen and has the most fantastical mystical grain patterns which I've done my best to show in the pics. I was experimenting a bit with this bowl just to see how finely I could turn it and the golden halo glow in some photos is the light from a sunbeam shining through the wood. So, for that reason only, I'm recommending that you use it simply for combining dry ingredients and using it to serve bon bons, nuts or decoratively for trinkets, keys or potpourri.

I turn the bowl with a stout rim to accommodate the handles and then when the bowl part is finished I carve the handles by eye and touch to make sure it all feels beautiful to hold and touch.

Measures approximately 8 inches (20cm) diameter handle to handle and 2.5 inches (6cm) height
