A very warm welcome to our Folksy shop.
Our waney-edged cheeseboards, food planks, table-centres and conversation pieces are patiently crafted from native British wood. Our pieces are characterised by their dramatic grain configuration, gnarly knots, branch buds and burrs and eccentric form. All food boards are fine sanded and finished with food safe oil. We provide care kits for all of our boards.
From the Waney Grain lathe we create food-safe sommeliers, fruit bowls, elegant dishes and pretty trinket pots in a wide range of wood varieties and sizes.
We produce charming Christmas trees and snowmen in a range of sizes, from 2 inch to 10 inch and in a wide variety of woods. Finished to a high standard that leaves a silk-like feel, these beautiful ornaments are popular all year round, and our customers typically buy them in odd-number collections. We also make these as tree-dangles to hang from a real Christmas tree! The natural colour palettes are tremendously broad and varied, and we use no artificial dyes or stains. Our boxed sets of 3 tree-dangles and 7 variety sample sets make delightful gifts.
Our decorated trees, called our Fantasy Forest, are gilded with gold and silver leaf, and confetti metals called tamise and abburstig. We also use a range of gilding flakes called Cosmic Shimmer and Aurora Flakes when a specific colour and texture is desired. This style of gilding gives a dappled, textured look but feels smooth to the touch. The gilding is protected with a soft sealing varnish to prevent colour fade or tarnishing. Our 'Raw' range of trees are gilded without a wax preliminary sealer, so that the grain is more pronounced.
We create tea-light holders in flat form and as Christmas trees/snowmen.
We also create candle sticks and decorative ornaments including wooden goblets and wooden bottles.
We warmly welcome requests for a bespoke service, both for our boards and our turnery.
This beautiful and elegant 16 cm Cherry wood tealight holder has been crafted in a simple form that combines visual elegance with pleasing tactility. There is also a recess for a candle within the tealight cup.
The rich warm copper-cinnamon tones and bold grain are typical of cherry wood, and the handfeel is a delight.
I have gilded the cup with a leaf metal called 'Abburstig'. This beautiful confetti is applied over a permanent bonding adhesive, called 'size' then brushed to remove all loose leaflets. The gilding is then sealed with a high quality varnish.
This charming cherry wood tealight holder will sit prettily on a dresser, a shelf, a mantelpiece or a hall table and would make a wonderful centrepiece for a Christmas table display. If you would like to give this tealight holder as a gift, we can post it directly to a UK address of your choice.
Nick loves to create wooden objet d'art and practical pieces that both look and feel delightful. When I'm asked to gild a piece for Nick I often seek inspiration in the natural world. For this tealight holder I wanted to add a very earthy look to the cup, and I found my inspiration in moss and lichen.
My gilding metals collection included some fascinating confetti called Abburstig. The colour collection that I chose included tawny, mossy and almost 'leaf-litter' tones that I wanted, and I was delighted with the outcome. An additional dimension to the gild is that it adds a visual challenge to the sleekness of the wood.
I'm very happy with the moss-lichen look that my gilding has added to Nick's cherry wood tealight holder, and it's been a real pleasure to work on this piece together.
