Prebends Bridge lit during the Lumiere Light Festival. It straddles the River Wear in Durham City standing close to the site of a previously used ford. It carries what was once a private road for the Dean and Chapter of Durham

The bridge was built between 1772-78 on the instructions of the Dean of Durham, Thomas Dampier, and designed by George Nicholson, architect to the Dean and Chapter to replace a bridge that was washed away in the flood of 1771. The architect Robert Mylne, who designed Blackfriars Bridge and several bridges over the Tyne, provided advice on situation and form.
Prebend - the portion of the revenues of a cathedral or collegiate church formerly granted to a canon or member of the chapter as his stipend.

Durham City in the North East of England has been fortunate in hosting the amazing Lumiere Light Festival over many years. Picking out some of the architectural treasures of this fine city. A place with ancient roots, and is the final resting place of no fewer than 4 saints, St. Cuthbert, St. Bede, St. Oswald, St. Aiden. On this occasion, the city's Prebends Bridge got the Lumiere treatment. Being held in November every other year it can be very hit and miss weatherwise and the large crowds make night photography a bit of a challenge. But with planning, perciverance, a lot of patience and head tourch you can find rewards.
