I love every aspect of the natural world, from its landscapes and colours to its plants and wildlife - hopefully that is reflected in my work.

The From Ogmore to Merthyr Mawr wave is inspired by summer walks along the Glamorgan Heritage coast near to my home. As a keen hiker, this dramatic stretch of coastline in South Wales provides much inspiration ideas for fused glass pieces. I snap away on my phone as I walk, capturing scenes which I later use back in my workshop.

My intention with this piece is to create a mini scene which captures the essence of a summer’s day down by the sea.

Full description

This made to order freestanding fused glass From Ogmore to Merthyr Mawr wave is my interpretation of the scene of the Ogmore estuary on the Glamorgan Heritage, looking across to Merthyr Mawr sand dunes and Porthcawl. No seaside scene would be complete without seagulls so I have hand-painted a few to add an element of life.

The versatile From Ogmore to Merthyr Mawr wave can be placed on windowsill so that when the sun shines through the glass, the colours of the scene are thrown onto the surface in front of it, as shown in the photo below. It can also be displayed against a plain pale wall where its colours can be appreciated in their true brightness.

Making the wave is a lengthy and fiddly process. I start by cutting and layering sheet glass which is then fused together in my kiln overnight. More glass is added before firing again and once it has cooled, the piece is fired for the final time to get its curved shape.

The piece is 25cm wide, 15cm high and 4cm deep. Should it need a clean, it is easily wiped over with warm soapy water. For delivery, your curve will arrive securely packaged in as much recyclable material as possible.

The From Ogmore to Merthyr Mawr wave would make a thoughtful and beautiful gift for those who love the Heritage Coast, the South Wales coastline, seaside scenery or just the great outdoors.
