Item details
Each of my "Island" pen designs is named after one of the uninhabited Orkney Isles.
Damsay is a small island of approximately 18 hectares and rises to just 11 meters (36ft) above sea level, and is situated in the Bay of Firth near Finstown. Now uninhabited, a Norse hall once stood on the islet, and it is where the Earl Erlend Haraldsson was killed by Earls Rognvald Kali Kolsson and Harald Maddadsson in 1154. Inlayer centuries a small nunnery was built on the island, creating a legend that no frogs or toads, mice or rats could survive there. About 2 miles from the Orcadian capital Kirkwall, a number of submerged structures have been discovered off Damsay, believed to be a Neolithic settlement submerged centuries ago by rising sea levels. A now submerged causeway has been discovered connecting the island with the Orkney mainland.
