A tiny turtle, cast in solid recycled silver reclaimed from mobile phones and computer equipment, swims on a 450 mm sterling silver chain fastened with a bolt ring clasp. It features a Lander turquoise stone to depict the rich colours of the scales of its shell and the blue of ocean waters. I initially carved a wax model of this turtle, which I used to create a mould and subsequently cast a perfect facsimile of it using fine silver clay, preserving all of the fine details from my wax carving. I then used a rub-over setting to securely fasten the turquoise cabochon. The pendant itself measures 15 mm or 1/2" nose to tail and is quite a chunky thickness of silver as seen in the photographs.
This pendant is carefully presented in a gift box, tied with a bow.
I love to work with unusual gemstones that fire my imagination as to what they could represent in a piece of jewellery. Lander turquoise comes from the USA and is a type of spiderweb turquoise with little islands of blue, green and golden brown floating in a black rock matrix which reminded me of the shell of a green sea turtle. Carving a turtle to be cast in fine silver as a mount for this unique stone gives me a feeling of destiny and of closing the circle.
