Our silver birch tree and its glorious amber-gold leaves in the autumn were the inspiration behind this design. The leaves begin to turn in late summer, just a very few, then begin drifting down from the top of the tree as autumn begins, carpeting the ground underneath with shades of gold and then brown as they gradually dry.

Wrap yourself up in this unique piece of wearable art to keep cosy and warm on chilly days. This fine wool scarf has been hand felted from two soft layers of merino fibres in deep olive green, with delicate swirls of paler olive, forest green and pistachio added to the background. Beautiful abstract leaves have been added to the surface, formed from chestnut, brown and amber wool and golden silk. Shimmering orange, gold and pistachio silk fibres outline the leaf shapes with extra pistachio over the surface to further catch the light.
A wet-felting felting process uses water, a little soap and very careful pressure to gradually adhere the design together as the fibres all entwine into a beautiful cohesive cloth. The silk is held onto by the wool fibres and drawn into the fabric as it is formed – it always has a fantastic wavy, rippled structure when the piece is complete.
The scarf is not true ‘cobweb’ felt, which is a single layer of fibres, but has characteristic sheer areas with the lovely undulating structure of the felt visible against the light. The colourful autumn leaf design is on one side with the reverse left plain deep green.
This lightweight scarf measures approximately 21cm wide by 149cm long and will be sent by 1st class recorded post. It can be gently hand-washed, care instructions are included.
Please be aware that screen monitor colours vary, and that I work in a smoke free home but do have very enthusiastic cat help from time to time!
