Working with wool and other fibres is a passion for me and needlefelting is such a versatile technique. It allows you to work in incredibly fine detail in both 2D and 3D, to embellish fabrics and in the case of the pet portraits that I do, create a life-like head of your favourite pet.

I build up the shape of the cat by stabbing or piercing the fibres repeatedly with a barbed needle. This compacts the fibres and allows me to develop that important 3D element which makes the animals stand out from their background and gives them their unique character. When I am happy with the shape I repeat the stabbing process, covering the surface with dyed merino fibres. It's a time-consuming process but the results are fun and it means that every animal portrait is unique.
