I began making gel prints because a problem with my foot limited my mobility and I couldn't stand at a conventional press. Making gel prints (sometimes Gelli but that's a trademark) allowed me to work seated and was very flexible allowing lots of room to experiment.

Gel printing uses a synthetic gelatin plate to which paints or inks are applied. They can be drawn into or otherwise textured in various ways. Paint can be applied with rollers or brushes using stencils or masks. The process lends itself to multiple layers enabling the production of complex prints without the need for a press. It allows me to work sitting at a table without any complex equipment, but is still capable of producing sophisticated imagery. I now use the process in its own right and not as a substitute for other media.

Coming up with titles is always a problem, but I tend to draw on either poetry or science fiction. In this case, the title draws on a story by James Blish (actually set on Jupiter)
