Signed, stamped, hand titled, open edition and mounted print of original illustration by Mark McPhelim.
Glasgow’s Tolbooth Steeple. Built in 1625, this is the last remains of what was once a much larger building for housing the council hall and city prison. Many a thief and witch saw their last few moments here as the Glaswegian public dramatically watched on!
Glasgow Cross itself became the transport centre for those visiting from Edinburgh and London and its walk way became THE place for the city's rich and famous to parade in their finest attire.
Sadly, the complex was eventually demolished leaving only the Tolbooth as testament to a key historic time in Glasgow.
I’ve used rough and stark blues, green, greys and reds within my illustration to capture a cold wintery Glasgow morning. The Tolbooth sits alone against the backdrop of an icy sky with a line of birds as its only company.
