These pieces start with a collagraph printing plate; a piece of board collaged with textures which can be anything from textiles and textured papers to acrylic medium. The printing plate is then used to create a single use mould onto which glass powder is built up in layers. The layers are built up face down, working from front to back, and coloured glass in powder form is mostly greyish whatever colour it will be when fired, so to a certain extent the selection and application of the colours relies on instinct and experience.
Once there are enough layers built up the piece is backed with a sheet of glass and fired in the kiln. After firing (which typically takes around 24 hours) the edges are finished and the panel is sandblasted and sealed before mounting.

Shore Study: Rocks I is part of an ongoing collection of subtly textured glass landscapes focusing on my local coastline and its differing moods. While these pieces are based on my own locality, I hope you will be able to see in them a place close to your own heart.
This particular scene depicts a purple blue sea out beyond a rocky beach, and is based on my favourite part of the estuary shoreline very close to my home where I often walk in the evenings. The area is on red sandstone so the colour of the sand (and mud!) on the estuary reflects this.
I created the glass panel by fusing glass and glass powder in my home studio on the Wirral peninsula in NW England. The textured glass panel is sandblasted to give it a wonderfully tactile finish which highlights the texture beautifully.
DIMENSIONS:
The glass panel is 14.5cm (5.75”) square and is mounted onto a white wooden panel measuring 25cm (10”) square / 2cm (0.75”) deep. The panel is corded on the back, ready to hang from a picture hook or nail.
