This little art glass dish is part of my 'lockdown sketchbook' series inspired by my local coastal landscape,. making it perfect for holding a small collection of shells or beach treasures. This dish has has a layer of frothy white over a warm golden yellow base, with trails of blue-black which appear almost metallic. It has a wonderfully tactile matte top surface, slightly uneven, organic edges, and a 'secret' - a highly polished underside.
This dish is around 13cm (5") square. The underside is highly polished glass so it will sit best on a small mat if displayed on a hard surface; or I can add small rubber feet to protect it if you would like - just let me know.
During the lockdown period I, in common with artists, went back to working in a sketchbook more regularly. This series of dishes grew directly from that work when I started to experiment with ways to replicate the colours and marks on glass.
I create these dishes from layers of coloured glass powder and clear glass fused together in my kiln. I then smooth and shape the edges of the dish before firing it again to shape it. Each kiln firing typically takes up to 24 hours.
