An embroidery pattern containing design templates, a choice of 4 printable taxonomy labels and all the information you need to embroider a Picasso Bug (Sphaerocoris annulus) in the style of a natural history museum specimen.

The bug is sewn in a 6-inch embroidery hoop using 4 embroidery stitches and an applique technique and can be made by a confident beginner.

The 18-page pattern assumes you have never embroidered or appliqued before, and the instructions start right at the beginning with how to prepare your fabric and threads. There are detailed instructions and step-by-step photos of how to sew the different embroidery and applique stitches used and advice on how to apply them to the bug. Experienced embroiderers can skip straight to the instructions for the bug itself, complete with close-up photos. There is also a section on how to mount your finished artwork for framing.

This 18-page pattern is printed double-sided in colour on A4 paper and will be sent to you unfolded and unbound.

Details of brand names, sizes and colour codes are given in the pattern. In summary, you will need:

A 6-inch embroidery hoop and a screwdriver for tightening its screw.
Cream and red cotton fabrics.
DMC stranded cotton embroidery thread.
A needle.
Scissors.
Dressmaker's carbon paper.
Polyester sewing thread.
A pencil and a ballpoint pen.
Cream felt.
Double-sided sticky tape or glue to attach the label.
Masking tape is useful but not essential.

If you wish to mount your embroidery you will also need:

Foam-core mountboard, cutting mat, craft knife, ruler and pins.
