The leaves have been stiffened and sealed with varnish and are secure enough that they may move slightly if touched, it is delicate, but less so than it looks and it can withstand quite a lot considering their paper construction. The added glue and varnish adds extra durability.
Dust periodically, gently with a small, soft haired brush (the leaves will withstand this), alternatively you can use an aerosol air duster from a distance of at least 12 inches away, in short bursts or a hair drier on a low power, cold setting – from a distance of at least 12 inches away.

A handcrafted original, this literary bonsai tree has made using real book pages from real pages from the JRR Tolkien, Lord of the Rings novel, Return of the King.
As pictured, ready for dispatch.
It measures 25cm tall (just under 10 inches), 28cm wide, 14cm depth, Wooden Base 2cm high, 13cm diameter.
(All sizes are approximate as it’s quite difficult to measure precisely).
This is a book art sculpture that has been very carefully decoupaged with lines from a JRR Tolkien novel. The words twist around the trunk of the tree with snippets from the book. I formed the trunk base and branches with papier mache. The trunk arches slightly and forks into two main boughs. This tree is quite different from my other trees as I have created it as a wider, narrower tree with a solid formed trunk base, instead of roots.
Each of the branches has been decorated with handcut paper leaves, cut from the same Lord of the Rings novel. The leaves have been hand-cut with small scissors from real book pages and quality olive green artists paper, something over 800 of these leaves were cut (I lost count being absorbed making it!) The numerous leaves have been securely and individually stuck into place over many hours (over several days) and they interlock between the smaller branches. The end result is actually more sturdy than one may imagine, as the glue and varnish work very well in holding the form.
It is finished with two coats of acrylic varnish.
