Since marrying my Welsh wife and moving to Wales I have been fascinated by the old traditional custom of giving a hand carved love spoon as a token of their love.

The practice of giving love spoons started in Wales during the 17th century. They were handcrafted by male suitors as a romantic gesture for the maiden they admired.

Traditionally, love spoons declared a gentleman's intent to court a lady. Given as a romantic sentiment, it symbolised a carvers devotion to producing a work of art worthy of their beloved.

A piece of oak was selected and cut to accommodate the size of the love spoon. The love spoon was cut using a scrollsaw following a design. I then handcarved it to enhance the fine detail. Next I sanded it to a smooth finish and coated it with several coats of lacquer to protect it and highlight the beautiful grain of the wood. The lacquer used is water and heat resistant, and toy safe.
