Mermaids are depicted in numerous films and are a firm favourite of children. They are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings.
Being a lover of ancient traditions, customs and folklore, I find the legend of the mermaid fascinating.
After the death of Alexander the Great’s sister, Thessalonike, a popular Greek legend emerged that she had turned into a mermaid. According to the legend, she would ask the sailors on any ship she would encounter only one question: “Is King Alexander alive?”. If the sailors answered “He lives and reigns and conquers the world” then she would calm the waters and bid the ship farewell. Any other answer would anger her, and she would stir up a terrible storm, dooming the ship and every sailor on board.

A piece of recycled wood was cleaned and sanded to enable me to upcycle it. The design was applied to the wood and cut using a Scroll Saw. The puzzle was then assembled and disassembled to ensure that all the pieces fitted together smoothly. Each piece was lightly sanded all around to give them a slight round over effect. It was then coated in Danish Oil and buffed to a smooth finish.
I am a firm believer in upcycling using reclaimed wood whenever possible. I often recycle the packaging I send out my items in.
I class this puzzle as an ornament, however this can be used as a jigsaw. Children should be supervised by an adult at all times.
Thanks for visiting.
