Description

The set of mills in the photographs is the set you will receive and is ready to ship as soon as you decide to purchase them! It's unique design inspired by the beautiful Japanese magnolia flowers would make a lovely centrepiece to your table.

I have been making mills for over twenty years. Every set is individually made with loving care and great attention to detail.

The salt and pepper mill set is 6 1/2" tall.

I turned the mills on my old Wadkin Bursgreen lathe before hand carving and texturing them. The brass knobs have a soft brushed finish and have been patinated to a deep bronze colour. Both mills have a durable, food safe, environmentally friendly finish - a plant oil base, with a beeswax topcoat that leaves the surface silky to the touch. It can be gently cleaned with a toothbrush and beeswax (or even coconut oil) and buffed with a soft cloth.

Both mills have a durable ceramic fully adjustable grinding mechanism. The mechanism produces unmatched consistency in grind while requiring only a slight twist to produce a significant amount of fresh, aromatic pepper or salt. They are also hollowed inside so that you can fit in more salt or pepper and don't have to refill so often! If they are never over-tightened (the cause of death for mills!) the mechanism will last for many years.

Thanks for looking!

Inspiration

This is a new design of mills inspired by the beautiful Japanese magnolia trees, Magnolia Liliiflora. They began on a visit to Bodnant Gardens in North Wales earlier in the year which is famous for its collections of plants from all around the world and among them are more than 500 magnolias. I love their large dramatic flowers graduating from a deep pink to white and so I used this as inspiration on the deeply carved sycamore base and top.

I also love the process of Shou Sugi Ban - the particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring which originated in Japan in the 18th century. Burning wood gives it a different softer black to colouring it with paints or dyes and accentuates the grain. So for the other mill base and top I scorched the surface of the turned ash and wire brushed it to bring out the beautiful three dimensional grain texture. The black provides a strong contrast to the pink creating a set that would look stunning against a turquoise colour scheme!
