Item details

Simple, rectangular, solid oak bench with corner bridle joints, and oak pegs. The bench is approximately 69cm long, 24cm wide and 39cm high.

Corner bridle joints have been scribed in to connect seat to legs. Bridle joints are an open type of mortise and tenon, though not usually used in this way. These corner bridle joints alternate at each end of the bench with the tenon part of the seat at one end and part of the leg at the other. The joints are then held together with a spot of glue and long oak pegs which also stop the bench racking.

The bench has been finely sanded and finished with matt, hard wax.

Every item has a makers mark and unique tally style number on the base. The makers mark is an abstract axe approximately 2cm long.

Chainsaw milled from a fallen branch, the grain twists and turns far more than milled from a straight tree stem. This twist in the grain is reflected in the shape of the finished board used for the seat. As the oak seasoned, the irregular grain has caused a slight twist and a slight curve to the shape of the seat. The resulting bench is both comfortable and full of character. All the other ‘defects’ of splits, cracks and hollows have also been retained.
