Most of my automata are made from beech wood and lime wood. I visited an exhibition at Japan House where they had an automaton made from cherry wood and this inspired me to order a large plank. It is ideal for making small automata as it is strong and fine grained. I have made several designs now. I am not sure where this one came from. It just posted up in my head and after a couple of months of thinking about it I am very pleased with the design I came up with. It gets away from the usual cams in a box, making the mechanism more prominent and minimising the support structures.

Full description

This automaton is made from American cherry wood with a walnut plinth. (Some of those pictured have an ash wood plinth (lighter) but these are now sold). The bear, balloon, cams and gears are made from cherry wood. For smooth and durable running it has brass axles and fittings with delrin bushes and rollers.

The automaton is 17cms to the top of the balloon.

This is one of a range of automata that I make that can be seen at lowbot.co.uk. A video is also available at https://youtu.be/Jq8IX7BdFOo.
