Item details
This piece of Bog Yew was retrieved from the one time peat bogs of Bourne Fen, South Lincolnshire, where it has laid buried for up to five thousand years, preserved from decay by acidic bog conditions. It is a rare form of timber that is "comparable to some of the world's most expensive tropical hardwoods". The wood is stained a rich brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water.
Since the fens were drained, over the years the peat land as been gradually shrinking. Each year during ploughing operations, bog oak, pine and yew are still occasionally retrieved from the remaining peat fens.
