"A Blue Day in May"

This image shows the wonderful view of the Small Isles - the Inner Hebridean islands of Rum, Eigg and Muck - across the Sea of the Hebrides from the rocks at Ardnamurchan lighthouse, the most westerly point on the British mainland. Out at the lighthouse in late May, everything was blue except for the clouds: blue sky, blue sea and blue islands. The weather was fine but rather hazy, and at times white or even grey clouds blocked the sun, but the scene remained strikingly blue though the hues shifted as the clouds passed by. As the wind was too cold to remain on the rocks long enough to sketch, I took a set of photos to work from and started work on this image that same evening.

The original painting was created with Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolours on Arches Aquarelle NOT 140lb (300gsm) paper, in a very limited colour palette. You can read more about it on my artwork blog (click the Blog link at the bottom of the page).
