Dare to wear! Spider webs are everywhere in the autumn and winter, often sparkling with dew or hoar frost. It is only on closer inspection that their natural delicacy and beauty becomes apparent. I have owned and loved my own spiderweb necklace since I was a child, so I challenged myself to make a beautiful spider on her web out of sterling silver to inspire rather than to shock. In fact spiders are very helpful to gardeners, so this would make an ideal gift for the gardener in your life. The spider herself is solid silver, created from shaped silver wire and granulation (tiny silver balls). Her legs are made from sterling silver wire and she has been soldered to a substantial pentagonal sterling silver web made of half a millimetre thick silver sheet textured into fine. gossamer-like lines using wire and skeletonized leaves from my own garden. The pendant is highly polished to a sparkling mirror finish, to mimic a frosty morning, and suspended from a 450 mm sterling silver trace chain. The pendant itself measures 27 mm and is shown in the last photograph next to an 80 mm or 3" vintage lipstick case to give a sense of scale. This pendant has been hallmarked by the London Assay Office for 925 sterling silver and has a 2019 date letter.
This spider pendant is presented in a gift box fastened with a bow.
In times past people believed that it was possible to capture the spirit of an animal by representing it in the form of a talisman and that talisman could be worn to protect the wearer or to give them the power possessed by the animal itself. This necklace could be useful to you if you are a gardener or if you need to cultivate the patience of a spider!
