Item details
In Maya language name for the bee is "xunan kab", meaning "(royal, noble) lady bee". In Maya culture, the bees were the subject of religious ceremonies and were a symbol of the bee-god Ah-Muzen-Cab, known from the Madrid Codex, one of three surviving pre-Columbian Maya books.
It has been made of a stuffed beige cotton fabric; hand-embroidered in dark brown. Its legs have been made from wire hand painted and then delicately wrapped with fibre to create shape.
The wings have been hand cut and tiny veins scored onto soft organza fabric, and they catch the light beautifully.
This is a tiny, delicate sculpture and will come to you in a little cardboard box.
