Paper mask making has been a slow development since I decided to make alternative use of over-stocked Japanese paper plates & cups in Feb. 2015.
I was always fond of using paper as a material to create things or simply for drawing & painting.
I recently made a bust figure from old cardboard boxes and newspapers for the purpose of displaying the masks.
Every item I make is a unique and original work, though many animal features are inspired by the images on screens and papers rather than visiting zoos for wild animals.
I also started making masks which are inspired by traditional Japanese masks and Japanese folklore stories. Japanese theme masks are lined with vintage kimono fabric which is from Kimono Conservation Society in Kyoto, Japan.
You are welcome to make enquiries for custom order masks as well.
You have 14 days, from receipt, to notify the seller if you wish to cancel your order or exchange an item.
Unless faulty, the following types of items are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to your specific requirements; items which deteriorate quickly (e.g. food), personal items sold with a hygiene seal (cosmetics, underwear) in instances where the seal is broken; digital items.
Please note that if your order is being posted outside mainland UK, you (or the recipient) may have to pay customs or VAT charges and a handling fee. The seller is not responsible for any charges or fees that may incur.
'Ao(blue)-Oni' - fighting to keep evil spirits away.
Made from hand cut Japanese paper, stuck together with paper tape, hand painted and the surface sealed with wax and acrylic sealer where necessary.
This Japanese paper is made from bamboo, sugar cane and water reed - fast growing sustainable plants - instead of tree pulp, quite flexible and sturdy.
The paints used are chalk & water-based and do not contain any animal products, however the wax sealer contains beeswax.
Should you wish to wear the mask, please place it on your forehead rather than in front of your face as this mask is lined with kimono fabric and also the eyes' position may not meet yours.
Dimensions: 20cm length, 16cm width
