I've just added stoneware (high fired) buttons to my shop. I'd be really interested to know what you think!
I use bands and blocks of acrylic paint, laid down on cotton calico, with stencils and print-making techniques creating an abstract pattern. Once dry, the image is cut and reassembled as stitched patchwork before satin-stitch embroidery in French silk thread is overlaid in a new pattern on the surface. This piece also incorporates back-stitch 'sketches'and mixed-colour threads to break up the solid colour.
The completed piece is constructed of layers of wadding and cotton, with fully-finished edges and a backing fabric on the reverse.
This item is mounted in a glazed, bespoke box frame with limewash finish. The piece measures approximately 175x175mm, frame size 405x405mm.
I have always loved patchwork. That ethos of 'make do and mend' and valuing scraps of fabric, fashioning something new and precious. Creating my own imagery first, before deconstructing it into cut squares, is a different take on this centuries-old tradition, but I love the way the 'piecing' process takes the original design out of my hands and makes something new. They don't always work, plenty end up on the cutting room floor, but editing is also part of the deal!
