Hand made glass is a great favourite with me. These beautiful pink sea urchin beads were created over a hot lamp using the same technique as is used for paperweights, with a thin coloured core covered with a large drop of transparent glass, which magnifies the design underneath it and gives it a three dimensional quality. These beads remind me of sea urchin shells, which come in shades of pink and green vertical stripes, with little bumps where the spines used to attach. Who would guess on seeing a live sea urchin, like a green/black pincushion, that it had such a beautiful shell. The effect is further enhanced by the cunningly trapped air-bubbles within the glass. Following Minimalist design principles, I treated these beads as simply as possible to turn them into earrings, coiling thick fine silver wire into ram's horn spirals (soldered shut), threading the bead, and then hammering the end of the wire flat to capture the bead. The beads are free to move up and down the wire, and the hammer marks have been left visible for texture. The earrings are mounted on my own, hand forged, sterling silver fish hook ear wires made at my home in West Sussex. Each earring measures 47 mm 1 7/8" in length and 14 mm 1/2" at it's widest point across the bead.
My Sea Urchin earrings come presented in a beautiful gift box, tied with a satin ribbon.
The final photograph shows the earrings with a vintage lipstick case, which measures 3", for scale.
