According to Roman Classical legend, Cupid is a cheeky boy who makes mischief by piercing the hearts of unsuspecting men and women with magical arrows to make them lovers. I thought it would be fun to use this idea and create a pendant where the sterling silver setting takes the form of an arrow piercing a genuine Murano heart from the Venetian island. This heart has been hand created in Venice using amethyst coloured glass over a silver foiled core in the traditional method to create a bead that rivals a precious stone in its depth of colour and complexity. I created the arrow myself by hammering thick silver wire and then detailing the fletchings using visible hammer marks and my fret saw. Once the bead was mounted I then had the heart-stopping task of hammering the arrow head next to the precious glass bead and by this method, permanently fixing the bead to the arrow. This pendant measures 48 mm 1 7/8" in length including the arrow and the heart is 22 mm 7/8" wide and 15 mm 1/2" deep. It is supplied on a stamped 925 sterling silver chain measuring 450 mm 17 3/4" long and is stamped 925 on the reverse of the arrow. The final photograph shows the pendant with a vintage lipstick case measuring 3" long to give a sense of scale.
This pendant is supplied in a gift box fastened with a bow ready to give as a present to your friend or loved one.
