I made this Dala horse pendant from sterling silver sheet using traditional silversmith techniques.

Firstly, I drew the design, stuck it onto the silver and cut out the design using my piercing saw. After filing and sanding, I soldered a piece of bent silver wire onto the horse’s neck for a collar, a star and bezel to his body, and finally a jump ring to hang the pendant on the chain. After making the s-hook for the chain and soldering a jump ring on to the other end of it, the whole necklace was polished. When I had finished polishing, I set the deep purple amethyst stone.

The pendant is hung from a sparkly 16" sterling silver oval diamond cut belcher chain and is fastened with a handmade sterling silver s-hook.

Once all that was done, the pendant was sent to London to be assayed and fully hallmarked at The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office.

The Dala horse is approximately 3.5 cm tall and just under 3.5 cm wide.

The pendant will come packaged in a high-quality black box with my logo embossed in silver.

I was inspired to make this pendant by some fabric I bought from Ikea back in the late 90s/early 2000s (showing my age now ;D). I made it into curtains for my sons’ bedroom when he was little. Sadly, he’s too old for that fabric now and I have it stashed in my fabric drawer. However, it is a personal favourite and has always stuck in my memory.

The history of the Dala (or Dalecarlian) horse can be traced back to the 17th century when little wooden horses were sold at markets in a region of central Sweden called Dalarna. In later times, men working in the forests would carve wooden horses during the very long winter nights and then bring them back to the village for the children to play with. Eventually, people began to paint the wooden horses, first in bright colours and later, they began to decorate them with kurbit folk art.

UK postage for items under £50 will be sent by Royal Mail Signed For 2nd Class. Items worth £50 and over will be sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery.
