I was inspired to make this pendant after reading an article in Country Living magazine about witch marks or apotropaic marks – marks inscribed on buildings in mediaeval times with the intention of keeping witches out.
These marks can be found on many old buildings across the country (including Shakespeare’s birthplace and the Tower of London) and are often found on places where witches might gain access to a building – above doors, on window frames, and on chimneys and mantelpieces.
The hexafoil or daisy wheel is one of the most commonly found apotropaic marks. It is thought to offer protection against evil and bring good luck. It is a very ancient symbol that is supposed to represent the sun and can be traced back to at least the 6th century BC.

I made this hexafoil “daisy wheel” pendant from sterling silver sheet using traditional silversmith techniques.
Firstly, I textured the silver sheet in my rolling mill. I then traced the design onto the silver, drilled all the necessary holes, and cut out the design using my piercing saw. After filing and sanding, I soldered a bezel to the centre and a jump ring to attach the chain. After making the s-hook for the chain and soldering a jump ring on to the other end of it, the whole necklace was polished. When I had finished polishing, I set the beautiful 6mm citrine stone - citrine is the birthstone for November.
The pendant is hung from a sparkly 16" sterling silver oval diamond cut belcher chain and is fastened with a handmade sterling silver s-hook.
Once all that was done, the pendant was sent to London to be assayed and fully hallmarked at The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office.
The pendant is approximately 3.5 cm in diameter.
The pendant will come packaged in a high-quality black box with my logo embossed in silver.
