Description

With all the things I make I try to use wood that would otherwise go to waste or get burnt, from branches I find when out on walks or, as in this case, part of a cherry tree that was being felled by the council.

Picking out some chunks that had straight grain I split the sections while the wood was still fresh and green with a hand tool called a froe, looking for where I could get the best contrast and grain pattern. The wood was then worked into shape with an axe before moving to a small craft knife and a crook knife to carve the bowl part.

Once carved the spoon was left to dry and season before then being sanded and oiled to get it to a smooth surface with a little shine that brings out the patterning of the wood

7. This spoon has a leaf shaped bowl with the grain running parallel to the handle. I cut the wood to intentionally show the boundary between the heart wood and the sap wood which can be seen with the lighter section of the wood showing along the bowl and into the nandle, I think the contrast really shows the wood at its best
