Carved from Hawthorn sourced from a broken branch near the River Clyde, Bowling. It is just under 7 inches long. It is tool finished (no sanding) and has food grade linseed oil applied to bring out the grain and protect the wood. It has an original design etched into the handle. This technique originates from Scandinavia and is called Kolrosing. After the design is drawn and then etched I rub cinnamon on to the etch marks and seal it with linseed oil. The design depicts the leaves, flowers and berries of the Hawthorn tree.

To clean this spoon use warn soapy water after use. Don't put it in the dishwasher. Apply oil occasionally to nourish the wood. Linseed/flax oil or walnut are best because they harden. Olive or vegetable oil will wash off.

I love carving spoons. The whole process, from collection the wood to sitting in my garden roughing out the shape with an axe to relaxing and finishing it off with a knife. It's physical work but very rewarding especially when oil is applied to the finished spoon and the grain comes out.
This spoon is from Hawthorn easy to carve freshly cut but dries hard and smooth. The inspiration for the design is from the tree itself which is one of my favourites.
