The kela scarf is hand block printed in deep green and aqua onto a light weight cotton silk mix fabric making it perfect for year round use. It is a large motif repeat with a tropical feel and has a bold stipe border on the short edges.
The banana leaf is a heritage motif and the inspiration for the print comes from my travels in Kerala, India. The banana leaf is often used in the south of India instead of a plate when serving a typical thali lunch. Completely waste free, the leaf with the leftover food is then fed to the cows! It is also used for food preparation. I have spotted these plants often on my travels and I hope this print evokes even a little of that tropical summer feeling!
The motif is hand block printed onto the fabric by first carving the design into wood blocks, then using these hand carved blocks to stamp the design onto the fabric. The Kela print required three blocks, one for the outline, one for the fill and last but not least the border stripes.
Due to the handmade process variation in the colour and print work should be expected.
