Life has rather caught up with me at the moment and there hasn’t been time to create as much as I’d like. I’m working on some new pieces at the moment and will post them as soon as they are available.

The tree of life patterns from early Elizabethan embroideries have always been an inspiration, I love the blackwork detail and flowing shapes and patterns. This piece was inspired by those embroideries, my love of bird soloists and my enthusiasm for capturing an image in glass that also reflects the beautiful blackwork embroidery with their intricate printed patterns.

Full description

A little singing Thrush in a fantasy tree surrounded by a border of grapes and grapevines. Handmade and designed by myself.

The contrast between the dark paint and the coloured glass really comes alive with some sunlight. The tree and the borders are created by painting the glass all over then using sharp sticks to cut and scratch the patterns. The scratched glass paint is then kiln fired to keep everything permanent. The pieces are joined using soldered copper foil and there is a small wire loop for hanging. The glass I use often has interesting tiny bubbles and ripples that create textures and these are part of the nature of the glass. Because the piece is handmade, every one is unique.

Size

The central panel with the bird and tree is 7cm square.

The overall size of the piece is 11 cm square.

Further information

The soldering is lead and therefore the piece is for decoration only and should not be placed where young children may handle or play with it.

Although at the moment the joins are shiny, these will develop a darker patina over time and give the piece a more ancient appearance.

Thank you for visiting my shop and do call in any time.
