Here we have a Maple platter turned then with the lathe running slowly a chainsaw cutter in an angle grinder is presented to the piece create the small cuts in the surface. Then with the piece stationery the same cutter is used to create the deeper grooves. The whole surface is then painted black using acrylic paint. The painted section is then sanded so the high points are taken back to the pale white wood and then a orange spirit stain is applied. When dry it gets several coats of clear lacquer and then the centre is turned out and finished with Osmo oil to create a shiny and matt combination. Measures 285mm x 40mm.
I made this piece using the new chainsaw toothed cutter i got for my angle grinder. I really like this piece as the orange can be substituted for a wide range of colours even two colours together.
