I am a bit of a magpie when it comes to wood and whenever I see that a tree has come down recently I try to see if there is a bit of it to spare that I can use to carve or make something.
With this bit of cherry I was close by a development for a new multistory carpark which was being built in Leeds and having seen all the trees which were cut down I had a chat with some of the guys doing the work and asked it they would mind me taking a bit to work into a bowl. They were more than happy for me to pop a couple of chunks into my car boot so lucky for me I had a lovely big chunk of cherry wood which sat in my store for about a year before I decided it had dried enough to turn but was still going to be green enough to see the bowl move and reshape itself as it seasoned which is one of the joys of working with greenwood, to see the material still has 'life' in it even after it has been cut
