Blue lapis lazuli point pendant on a sterling silver chain (18"/45cms). The lapis pendulum measures 4cms long. Perfect on its own, its simple design can be worn casually or to add interest to evening wear.
The gold you see within the stone is pyrite, which has formed with the lapis. The name comes from the Latin 'Lapis' for stone, and the Arabic 'Azula' meaning blue. Its formation occurred millions of years ago when lime matamorphosed into marble.
This gemstone holds lots of interest with its natural deep blue tones and flecks of golden pyrite. Once used as a pigment ground for painting, it was extremely rare and used sparingly.
If this colour was found in artwork, it was a sign the commissioning family had spent a great deal of money on that piece of artwork. It was once mistakenly thought to be sapphire when found in the Egyptian tombstones.
