About Murano Glass Beads
Glass beads have been made on the island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon since the 13th Century when glassmaking was moved there to prevent fires breaking out in the city. Many of the techniques used by the artists who make the glass are closely guarded secrets, and it helped to be located on an island where few people were allowed to visit. Nowadays the glass making process is still done by hand and Murano glass is recognised as the finest of its kind in the world. No two Murano beads are alike and many are lined in fine silver or 24 Karat gold to enhance their beauty. Different artists specialize in different bead designs, perfecting their technique over many years, using the simplest of tools. As the saying goes "Good tools are nice, but good hands are better."

A beautiful sterling silver fish only 8 mm long and cut by hand from reticulated sterling silver sheet is teamed with an 8 mm Venetian Murano glass heart in raspberry pink and a creamy white freshwater pearl to create this stunning necklace. It hangs from a solid sterling silver hoop (representing good Karma) through which the 40 mm sterling silver chain is threaded. All of the fixtures of this delightful piece have been hand crafted by me personally from sterling silver and would make a lovely Valentines Day gift or a birthday present for a piscean. These beautiful Murano hearts are available in a rainbow of colours, so if you require I can make you a similar necklace in a different colour. Just ask me via Folksy or my Facebook page. The final photograph shows the pendant next to an 80 mm vintage lipstick case to give a sense of scale. This pendant has been given full UK hallmarks by the London Assay Office, including my personal maker's mark.
