Originating in Germany as farmhands, these versatile working dogs have been put to many uses, both on the farm (herding livestock, rat catching, guarding, retrieving) and in the wider community (military messenger, dispatch carrier, security & police dog). Frequently called the ‘thinking dog’ or the ‘dog with a human brain’, the schnauzer brings to mind a sage wizard, with its profuse whiskers and a gleam of intelligence in its eyes. A schnauzer was the first dog trained to detect cancer cells.

Now in 3 sizes (miniature, standard and giant) these lively, independent thinkers may look like dignified professors but they also like to let their hair down!

The print combines my hand drawn lettering with illustration and each one is hand-printed on my press in a sophisticated dark grey ink, then individually signed.

They will fit happily in a ready made frame, like the Ikea Ribba (52x52cm square frame with matt/mount included) or they can be bought in handmade wooden frames from my website at (UK shipping only for framed prints).

Paper size is approx 315 x 315mm

These prints combine hand drawn lettering with illustration. I was inspired to tell the story of different dog breeds using a dog tag design. I am fascinated by the history and unique characteristics that define particular breeds and I wanted to celebrate that uniqueness by creating dog breed specific prints.

The dog tag idea came from thoughts about the plight of dogs in rescue centres and shelters. I imagined that they might be wearing a dog tag that helped prospective owners find out more about the dog in the hope that they might be rescued and given a ‘forever home’. There’s a bit of the children’s character Paddington Bear in this project too - the lost bear with a luggage label attached - entreating its finder to 'look after this bear'.
