We used to knit this pattern - plain, preferably brightly coloured, and particularly not in green (which is considered unlucky by fishermen) - for the people of the fishing fleet in Hull. Since then I have enjoyed experimenting with colours and stripes on the same pattern. Bright ones are good for being visible on mountains, and plain dark ones are very smart with formal clothes. Here is one variation of the bright, stripy theme.

A traditional hat with a stripy twist - excellent for keeping warm and being seen in the snow!
Pure new wool - quality double knit Merino Blend.
Hand-knitted throughout
Machine wash at 40C or less on wool or synthetics cycle - do not bleach or tumble dry.
Hat is extremely stretchy, will fit any adult and most older children. (When flat, hat measures approximately 25cm from crown to edge, and approximately 36cm circumference around the bottom edge - due to stretch it will fit any head larger than this).
