Was-A-Log Rolling pin, handmade from north Essex Ash.

This Was-A-Log Rolling pin is hand turned from greenwood (Greenwood is wood that is worked in an unseasoned state, it is then dried. This is a very traditional method of working wood.)

All the wood is grown in the North Essex (UK) countryside and sourced from a local woodland (go to my website and look for the Gosfield map to see where the wood was grown)

The ash has been spit and processed using traditional tools and is finished with a food safe oil. It has hand faceted ends, a feature I put on most of my work and comes packed in an atractive tube.

This rolling pin is 380mm (15") long and 39 mm (1 1/2") in diameter.

It should be wiped clean with water and not left immersed, don't use any detergent on it.

As it is a unique handmade item it will appear slightly different from the photos.

Was-A-Log is a range of products that use superb locally sourced wood normally destined to be firewood. The wood is used as firewood as the trees are felled in such small numbers there is no cost effective infrastructure to send the high quality trees to saw mills.

I source the wood personally from local woodsmen or tree surgeons and process it with traditional tools, splitting with wedges and froes (traditional hand tools).

After some axe work and shaping with a draw knife I turn the wood on a pole lathe or an electric lathe or shape it with traditional hand tools.

I try to use as much of the log as possible, creating very little waste, and it is only when I have split the log can I see what it will let me make.
